Planning My Trade-Show Presence

By Susanne Pichotta, ps-communications*

Presence at a trade fair is expensive, which is why it should be worth it. But how can I tell if a trade fair presence is
worth it? Is it the right trade fair? Or even the right instrument? Should we even plan a trade fair presence after visitor numbers were down at the furnishing trade fairs in 2009?
Of course there is no generally valid answer to these questions. Each company has to analyse and decide for itself. The success of a trade fair depends on the planning in advance. This does not just mean working through checklists, but rather first determining: What do we want to achieve?

New Trends in Booth Construction

Interview with Axel von Hagen, Chairman of the Board of FAMAB, and owner of von Hagen Design, Germany. FAMAB is the German association of service providers for live events.

Axel von Hagen

Mr. von Hagen, how have the trade fair builders and other service providers for the trade fair presence of companies come through the crisis?

The impacts of the economic crisis in the area of trade fairs were certainly noticeable in 2009 after continuous growth in recent years. In addition to a drop in the sale of space by trade fair companies and reduced stand budgets on the part of exhibitors, the weak presence of leading trade fairs in Germany due to the rotation in 2009 after a strong trade fair year in 2008 led to reduced net rental space overall. Trade fairs abroad are also being utilised at a reduced rate

China`s fast economic recovery is an opportunity for exporters

Asian Development Bank (ADB) says that Asia and especially China contributed very positively to the worldwide recovery. Bottom of the recession has been left in the first Quarter 2009 in Asia. Overall the Asian Development Bank is raising the growth expectation (gross domestic product) for 2009 from 3,4 % to 3,9 % for Asia.

Still exceptional high growth rates of Chinese economy
The Chinese economy grew in the first half of 2009 by 7,1 % - in real terms (constant prices). ADB expects for the whole year 2009 an increase of 8,2 % after 9,0 % in 2008. The growth rates for the future will be less high than in the past, however an expectation of 8,9 % real GDP growth for 2010 is remarkably high compared to growth rates in the other large economies of the world.

Chinese retail expenditure increased by 15 %
According to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics, the national total retail sales of consumer goods in the first half increased by 15%. Furniture retail sales for example increased by 28.3%! Retail sales throughout the crisis are reported to grow in stability in the 2tier cities and regions, whereas 1tier cities saw a decline and subsequent growth.

China as import market
Thus China is giving numerous opportunities to develop business and is becoming a more and more attractive market for exporters worldwide. Subsequently the trade shows are increasingly important to supply the internal chinese market and there are numerous products, which chinese companies are importing to sell to domestic companies and consumers.
