Stockholm Furniture Fair

Stockholm Furniture Fair - Unfold the Skandinavian design scene

If you want an overview of the Nordic market, this is the place to be. With Nordic exhibitors at more than 80 %, Stockholm Furniture Fair and Northern Light Fair are the World’s largest meeting place for Nordic design. In Stockholm you will meet over 600 companies from Sweden and the other Nordic countries. The fair will be from Tuesday, 9th of February to Saturday, 13th of February at the Stockholm fairground Älvisiö.

The trade show targets on the visitor side at retail and at the contract and commercial markets: retailers, wholesalers, interior decorators, designers, architects and specifyers. It is expected that visitor numbers in 2010 will go up to more than 40 000 after there had been roughly 35 000 visiting the show in the difficult year 2009.

The new Look
The fair opens a comprehensive range of home and office furnitures, home textiles and interior design, as well as lighting and interior accessories. For the 2010 edition, about 650 exhibitors are expected to present their merchandise. 2010, the fair will have a completely new look.

A tougher economic climate demands a brave endeavour, and the organizer, Stockholm International Fairs, rises to the challenge. The complex has  been extended by new 8,360 m²: The A hall has been extended and the eastern entrance has had a complete makeover. This makes it possible to satisfy both the current exhibitors, who have required more floor space, and the new exhibitors to come. In addition, there is room for more special exhibitions. The interior layout in the halls has also been changed, too. The handy size of the fairground – four halls today totalling 58,530 m² – makes the visit efficient and concentrated.

Another novelty is the opening times. There is an additional weekday for trade visitors, so that the tradefair now runs from Tuesday to Saturday, with Saturday afternoon being open to the public also.

Five Nordic architects show their projects
Together with Forum, the magazine for Nordic Architecture, Design and Interior Design, there is an exhibition showing current projects by the foremost Nordic talents in architecture. The curators Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom from TAF Artchitecture Studio have compiled material from the projects focusing on the process of product development – from order, via research and analysis, approved and rejected ideas, challenges and problems, culminating in the end result.

Paul Smith is the Guest of Honour
Sir Paul is mostly known as a fashion designer, but he has also designed furniture and furniture upholstery for Cappellini, Kvadrat and Maharam, among others, as well as carpets for The Rug Company. Paul Smith is a brilliant example on the more and more pronounced cross-genre design where fashion, interior design and furniture cross-fertilise. The stores have always been an important aspect of Paul Smith‘s work.

Learn & Earn – increase sales in showroom and shops
In the Learn & Earn inspirational exhibition showcases, there are the latest results about store sales. The ideas for modern sales techniques and innovative store design, sales support, floor management, materials and new technology are in focus, rather than aesthetics and products. Camilla Näslund from Designmäklarna in Umeå has initiated this and architect Ola Rune, CKR, is art director for the exhibition.

The future is made in the Greenhouse
The Greenhouse is the department for independent designers and design schools from the Nordic countries. There seem to have been a record number of applications and more of those accepted than ever in 2010. Materials and methods are central to the design process. Inspiration and ideas are to be had in the “Let’s do” it exhibition, which was developed with the Materiallibrary. The exhibition and seminars show common and uncommon methods of manufacturing and processing for furniture production and interior design. There is to learn about vacuum forming, injection-moulding, punching and surface finishing in a simple way. Jens Fager is responsible for the hall design.
