Tendence 2009

Source: Expo-port Reporter

Tendence Frankfurt, 2009 was quite heavily affected by the economic crisis. The exhibitor and visitor numbers were much less than the previous events. Still, most participants took a very optimistic view of the overall situation. Business conducted was generally seen as good especially considering the present day situations. Emphasis on good quality inexpensive products that offered better affordability for all was evident. Organizers concern about the heavy reduction in numbers has led to a decision for conducting international polls to find most suitable dates for holding the annual event. Comments received mostly were good and reiterated the value of networking opportunities made available at the event.

Tendence Frankfurt, 2009 was held from July 3 – 7 by the Messe Frankfurt Group at Exhibition Centre Frankfurt. Tendence Frankfurt, 2009 also known as the International Frankfurt Autumn Fair recorded lesser exhibitor and visitor numbers this year. There were 2,091 exhibitors from 63 countries. And there were over 50,000 trade visitors from 97 countries. There was a reduction of about 8% in the number of German visitors. There was a steep reduction in the number of international buyers, which slashed down by almost one-third. Hence, there was about 20% reduction in overall visitor numbers. In all, there were about 27% international buyers. The representations were better from far off countries. The number of visitors from European countries was more or less unchanged. The top five European representations were from the countries like – Switzerland, Italy, Austria, The Netherlands and France.

Probable Rescheduling of Tendence Dates in Sight:

Since 2007 it was decided by the organizers to hold the event in July rather than in August, as it was previously held. This was done at the request of the participants. But it is being found that this decision was not being fully acceptable. This was perceived from the initial polls conducted at 2009’s event. At the behest of the Tendence Exhibitor Advisory Council, the organizers have now decided to hold a comprehensive international poll from the exhibitors and visitors to decide upon the dates of the event that would be suitable to all. Presently considerable reduction in visitors and exhibitors is being blamed on the ongoing recession. The reasons for advancing the dates of the event were based upon the changes in order patterns of the trade and related shift in the ordering procedure from the end of August till June and July.

Dr. Michael Peters, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt elaborated upon this as follows - “Given the present situation, it is especially important that we examine our fairs more frequently and intensively than ever before in terms of their conceptual details and, of course, make any revisions necessary. Therefore, all decisions must be reviewed at regular intervals and adjusted or corrected to take account of new information”.

Good business through Smaller Companies, Innovative and Inexpensive Products:

Many exhibitors projected good sales and contacts built-up at the event. Exhibitors seemed to take a realistic view rather than an idealistic one considering the business conducted. This was a more optimistic approach to the business as a whole as Tendence has always been one of the foremost showcases of consumer goods. Many new exhibitors as well as small to mid sized companies were quite satisfied with their performance. Arjen de Jong, Account Manager, Van der Leeden, The Netherlands commented, “Things are going well. We continue to have a positive outlook. The crisis does not seem to be on people’s minds and we continue to receive positive feedback from our customers. Products costing less than € 20 are being purchased as before.”

Many retailers also reported good business networking and order writing opportunities presented to them at the event. Chris Beinker, Sales Manager, Hakbijl Glas, The Netherlands reportedly remarked, “At present, the economic situation is difficult. Against this background, we are very pleased with the results of our business at Collectione. The order situation is constant – we have received just as many orders this year as last year. Tendence is so important for us that we launch our latest products here. Our customers know this and, therefore, we have met many of them here.”

Smaller companies from Germany participated actively in buying; thus, showing bold entrepreneurial approach despite the economic downturn. This was quite encouraging for the exhibitors. Stephan Koziol, General Manager of Koziol – Ideas for Friends GmbH said, “The larger number of German dealers and their willingness to order compensated somewhat for the poor export business”.

Thomas Grothkopp, General Manager of the German Association for Tableware, Housewares and Home Accessories confirmed, “Tendence was held in an extremely difficult situation. Over recent weeks, the climate of consumption in the home accessories field has worsened in the wake of the economic crisis.” He further added, “Many dealers are still negotiating with banks, which are afraid to lend money. Nevertheless, they came to Frankfurt – mostly for just one or two days – to see the latest trends, decorative images and products, to find new suppliers who can help them emphasize their individuality as specialist retailers for a discerning clientele.

The dates for the next event are confirmed for July 2 – 6, 2010.
