Cadeaux March 2010: Spring fever for the decoration retail trade

Source: Team Expoport

9,000 visitors came to CADEAUX Leipzig, the most important trade show for gifts and home decoration in East Germany. Spring awakening despite the return of winter: around 9,000 trade visitors came to the Exhibition Centre for the 36th CADEAUX Leipzig.
According to a survey carried out by the Marktforschungsinstitut Leipzig, 94 per cent of exhibitors concluded deals at CADEAUX Leipzig. 82 per cent felt they had achieved their aims for the fair, 81 per cent of this year’s exhibitors want to come back next time.

From 6 to 8 March 2010, the gift and decoration retail trade was able to find out all about the trends for the coming season and to order the latest products from 320 exhibitors. "After a restrained start to the fair on Saturday - caused by the weather's high jinks which made getting here very difficult - we had a lively response on Sunday in particular", reports Martin Buhl-Wagner, managing director of the Leipziger Messe. "On balance, we were able to keep up to the level of last year’s visitor numbers." This sector is absolutely longing for spring, as project director Andreas Zachlod could see. "The signals are set to green in the truest sense of the word. Many exhibitors reported high volumes of orders. Orders were particularly strong for products that make home life lovelier and boost a sense of well-being - from table and garden accessories through wellness products on to gourmet gifts."

Trend Guru guidelines
Despite, or perhaps precisely because of our crisis-ridden times, people’s desire to be nice to themselves is currently an important motivating force for the consumer goods sector, according to Professor Peter Wippermann. The well-known trend researcher forecasts a real explosion of colour after the long, gloomy winter. "People will bring colours without end into their homes, to do something nice for themselves and to liven up their everyday lives aesthetically", said the founder of the Trendbüro Hamburg, speaking at CADEAUX Leipzig.

"People don't compare themselves with the neighbour any more, but enhance their own home with small comforts. Practical basics like furniture, for example, are jazzed up in line with the trends, using decorative accessories such as cushions, covers, candles or vases. This is where the real business is in the immediate future", as the trend expert wanted the specialist retail trade to know.

Something special in the ordinary
Achieving a big impact by modest means was also the central topic for Saxony master florists Reinhold Pause and David Gehrisch. In the Floristry Forum, they showed how original plant decorations can be conjured up for table settings, or as gifts, using ordinary, everyday items - cable fasteners, clothes-pegs and paper clips, hair-curlers or pieces of garden hose. Reinhold Pause is also looking forward to the warmer season: "The first rays of sunshine bring people into the shop, wanting to take a bit of spring home with them", as the Chemnitz florist knows by experience. "As a retailer, it’s important to have the right products at the ready and to create the atmosphere that makes people want to buy." As an example, the florist showed how to decorate saucepans, watering cans and other household objects with flowers and plants, restyling them to make unusual and individual gift items. Interesting settings rather than low prices
