PREVIEW: Conlife – Conference and Exhibition for Connected Life - May 2010
Source: team expoportIn May, 19th and 20th this year, at the Congress-Centre Nord of the Cologne Fairground, the ConLife Conference and Exhibition for Connected Life, will take place for the first time. ConLife concentrates on home networking. Interior Architects and Decorators won’t get around in future without integrating home networking and electronics into their planning; concerning not only entertainment, leisure and home office, but increasingly the kitchen design, energy and warm water supplies as well as the heating regulations.

Why is this Fair-Congress important for Interior Designers and Decorators?
For the modern interior decoration market, networking technology without an aesthetical concept and design is unthinkable. Designers and interior architects will be increasingly confronted with the challenge to include simple or intricate networking solutions into their room and outdoor planning. The requirements concerning flexibility and changeableness to installations and interior decoration items will be rising, because movable technology will be part of the daily living – anywhere in the house.
“Intelligent” furniture, for instance, might be increasingly equipped with integrated lighting, remote controls or simply a tilting tray with electrical supply for the laptop: not only considered a lifestyle matter but quality of life for many people with special needs.
There will be more thermal sensors reacting to personal presence and generate a personalised program flow – including “walk the dog” memos. The market is open to infinite growing possibilities and should be made accessible to greater public with scaled requirements and flexible price concepts.
Comprehensive Presentations of Connected Life Solutions
At the ConLife, notable experts will inform broadly about new Connected Life solutions. In Germany, there has been no specialised platform, up to now, ready to discuss and present this subject. Main themes are: Home Entertainment, Lifestyle & Communication, Smart Metering & Energy Efficiency, Health care & Ambient Assisted Living.
Innovational product worlds are presented on a solid technical foundation. The development of a fundamentally new branch in the interior decoration sector – especially for the medium or small sized business - offers broad business prospects.
Next to the market relevant information, there will be discussed the legal framework requirements and consumer questions, too. Subjects range from consumer electronics, telecommunications and mobile communications, energy supply, residential industry and real estate up to health care.
The ConLife 2010 concentrates the diverse tendencies in home networking to a central event and brings the determining actors on the sector to an interdisciplinary exchange.
The Congress
In two parallel theme blocks, connected life user scenarios are presented through present standards and technologies. A third theme block is about home networking and innovational product worlds regarded as a business concept for trade and craft – on the first day. And on the second day, legal aspects as digital identity and digital rights management are discussed.
Intelligent Buildings
Following BITKOM- President August Wilhelm Scheer, in many households today, there are primary networking rudiments, so called isolated applications, but that we were far from the “one-remote-control-house”. Home networking in Germany will therefore develop into a market of billion of Euros, he says, and become a beater of the whole range of consumer electronics. The now separated IT, telecommunications and entertainment electronics and equipments will be increasingly networked, wireless and by cable. In 2008, Germans have set the basis for networking their household electronics, spending about 600 million Euros for routers and similar accessories - facts supplied by the BITKOM.
Home networking should not solely raise the personal comfort, but ease applications in other sectors as telemedicine or energy saving in intelligent buildings. The BITKOM has published studies in this regard on occasion of the third national IT-summit. One of the results: if the control mode of lighting and heating is adjusted to the individual characteristics of the residents, energy costs of a household may be cut by a third!
Hybrid TV
According to BITKOM, more than every fifth flat screen TV is internet compatible. In 2010, BITKOM sustains, there will be about 2 million hybrid TVs, which means almost a sales quadruplicating. In 2011, sales of hybrid TV- sets are considered to redouble to 4 million unities. At the beginning of 2010, there were more than 10.3 million constant users in Germany. This corresponds to an increase of 18% comparing to the former year.
A representative BITKOM survey showed that the TV set will be integrated into the home networking and given multiple uses. 28% of the Germans older than 10 have looked up their digital photographs on their TV set already in 2008. Another 34% were interested in the subject. Every third German wishes to own and use a digital music library. 6% have one already. There is a high interest in downloading films on the TV set (29%), to do internet surfing (25%) and to use video-telephone services (20%). BITKOM-Vice President Berg is sure that the separation “TV in the living-room / PC in the office” is obsolete. The fact is that entertainment electronics and computers are increasingly used in an interactive way.
„The target is: Make available Films, Photos and Music any time, anywhere on any end device“
(BITKOM-Vice President Berg)
Organisers are the Koelnmesse and the Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media – BITKOM, overseen by the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology.
