Tendence: positive climate

Significantly more visitors to Frankfurt Autumn Fair Tendence. Frankfurt Autumn Fair Tendence makes a successful recovery Trade and industry with an optimistic view of future economic developments.

After five days, from 27 to 31 August, the 2010 edition of Frankfurt Autumn Fair Tendence can report more visitors than last year. “Following a small increase in exhibitor numbers and now almost 57,000 visitors, up eight percent, Tendence is well on the way to making a full recovery. By shifting the fair back to its traditional time slot at the end of August, we have taken an important step towards stabilising the Frankfurt Autumn Fair”, says Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt GmbH.

On over 71,000 square metres of exhibition space (net) in ten halls, 2,130 exhibitors from 57 countries presented the latest products for the home, furnishing and giving in the coming autumn, winter and, in particular, busy Christmas season to an audience of 57,000 visitors from 90 countries. The top 5 non-German nations were Switzerland, Italy, The Netherlands, Austria and France. Moreover, the number of visitors from the USA doubled and, altogether, a quarter of all visitors came from outside Germany.

A good mood on both the exhibitor and visitor sides was registered by Stephan Koziol, General Manager of koziol – ideas for friends GmbH: “Holding Tendence later in the year has been very good for us and we hope that continuing to hold the fair at this time will help make it more stable in the future. This is important because Tendence is the sector’s leading trade fair in the autumn.” The generally good economic prognoses for the second half of the year and the very important Christmas business have given the trade grounds for greater optimism. “Dealers are bolder and the volume of orders placed has, roughly speaking, reached the level of 2008”, confirms Bernd D. Ehrengart, General Manager of Lambert GmbH. This judgment is also reflected by the visitor poll conducted by Messe Frankfurt during Tendence, which showed that over 85 percent of inter¬viewees consider the current economic situation in the sector to be satisfactory to good. At present, almost three quarters of the exhibitors polled say the economic situation in the sector is satis¬factory to good. Last year, only half of them were of this opinion. All in all, there has been an unequivocal improvement in the economic outlook for both trade and industry and, in line with this, the number of orders placed by visitors has increased once again.

In view of this background of economic recovery and the return to the traditional time of year, Tendence 2010 set an important accent that was welcomed by both exhibitors and visitors. Speaking for the trade in general, Thomas Grothkopp, General Manager of the German Association for Tableware, Housewares and Home Decor (Bundes¬verband für den Gedeckten Tisch, Hausrat und Wohnkultur e.V. – GPK) confirmed, “Messe Frankfurt has succeeded in giving Tendence a more independent image. Now, it is essential to continue honing the concept to make Tendence the international trend fair for gifts and the home. For the specialist trade, Tendence in this form is no longer the little brother of the other, successful consumer-goods fairs in Frankfurt but, more and more, an independent event.

He was seconded in this by Hamid Yazdtschi, General Manager of Gilde Macrander Group, who said, “The re-launch has been successful. Despite the various prophecies of doom, the doubters have clearly been shown to be in the wrong – Tendence is not only Europe’s biggest autumn fair but also a great success again.”

“All signals go for Tendence”, is also the opinion of the European Lifestyle Association (Europäischer Verband Lifestyle – EVL): “Thanks to the new structure, visitors do not have to walk so far. At the same time, buyers find a huge international range of products. And this helps ensure a very good mood among dealers”, says Heike Tscherwinka, EVL General Manager, describing the situation at this year’s Tendence. In line with this positive appreciation, 87 percent of buyers said they had achieved their goals for the fair. As in the past, over 70 percent of visitors to this year’s Frankfurt Autumn Fair came from the top management of their companies and were equipped with the all-important decision-making and purchasing authority. All in all, top marks for Tendence 2010.

Home and gift trends for the autumn / winter season
In the case of home trends, the coming season is set to introduce colourful retro aspects into the living room. Knitted fabrics are more in demand than ever before. Trendy knitted products are not only popular for home textiles, they are even used for flower vases or teapots. A casual, used-look underscores the lively character of furniture and complies with the consumer desire for authenticity. When it comes to colours, the spectrum is dominated by natural shades. The top candidate for the trend colour of the season is dark green. However, this Christmas will be colourful: Father Christmases will do their rounds in lilac and pink while Christmas baubles are no less bold in orange, turquoise, pink and yellow.

Natural materials and colours are also highly rated for gift ideas and there are trendy cases made of felt and leather for the complete range of mobile-communication devices. Amusing printed mottos ensure a humorous note. Savings boxes are enjoying a revival and products for personal well-being are right at the top of people’s lists for Father Christmas. Also popular in the cold season are heating pads shaped like animals, comfort cushions for the little ones, foot warmers and candles. Anyone planning to give jewellery should opt for a versatile piece. Through clever eyelets and fastening systems, necklaces can be worn either short or long.

The next Tendence will be held from 26 to 30 August 2011.
