DOMOTEX HANNOVER, 2009, EVENT REPORT
Source: Expoport ReporterOverall the business was positive amidst some apprehensions from the exhibitors. The overseas attendance showed betterment, albeit the local attendance was markedly lesser than the previous year’s. Superior competence level of visiting professionals was the main highlight of this year’s show.
Domotex, Hannover, 2009, the trade show for carpets and floor coverings was slightly affected with the blowing winds of changes on the financial horizons but still managed to save the usual air of fun and frolic associated with many awards. Domotex, Hannover 2009 was conducted during 17 to 20 January.
Domotex 2009
Total attendance was lower
The attendance in this annual event was lower than the last year’s at 38,000. The 1,384 exhibitors this year however, were of the undivided view that the leads generated were of quite high quality. Stephan Kühne, the member of the Deutsche Messe Managing Board in charge of Domotex was of the opinion that the show brought good business prospects to the increased exhibitors this year, when he said, "Despite the tough economic climate, DOMOTEX attracted more exhibitors than the comparable previous event, while at the same time experiencing a further increase in the calibre of attending professionals and providing the industry with new ideas through a range of innovative info forums. Any crisis also creates a wealth of new opportunities. DOMOTEX 2009 has emitted positive signals in tough times and given the industry valuable guidance for the road ahead."
This view was also reiterated by the comments of Dr. Ali Ipektchi, Chairman of the European Carpet Importers Association (EUCA), "In good times, trade fairs play an important role. In difficult times, their importance is greater still, since the industry needs a main gathering place at which to compare notes on the challenges ahead. The overall mood at DOMOTEX was positive, despite a measure of uncertainty about the outlook for 2009."
Increasing international attendance
This year the show had 82% exhibitors and 64% of trade visitors from abroad (up by 5% from the last year). Turnout from Eastern Europe and Americas was better this year. This may be a good indication of the popularity and international appeal of the show. Superior Competence of Visiting Professionals.
Quality of visitors higher
The trend noticed this year was of trade visitors having better competence levels in their individual organizations. The current economic situation has forced the organizations all over the world to follow cost-cutting paths. This includes allocation of smaller travel budgets and reduction of other expenditures. There was seen a noticeable increase in the visitors having job profiles as self-employed, managing directors and department heads, meaning people having better purchase decision making abilities in their respective organizations. The visitors also had higher numbers of people with professional backgrounds in skilled trades, interior decoration and design.
Along with this, greater innovation in products and drift towards stylization was seen at the 2009 trade show. Despite the economic bleakness Domotex managed to deliver its promise of good international portfolio with amalgamation of new and innovative style trends.
Carpet Design Award and Contractworld Award
The Carpet Design Awards 2009 were given amidst 140 products from 18 countries. The awardees were judged on exceptional design, creativity and material quality. 30 final entries were chosen, which remained on display for the visitors for the duration of the show.
The Contractworld.award 2009 went to the architects of Japan, France and Portugal. This competition for the interior design work has 60,000 Euros in prize money. A total of 570 projects were entered, which included 293 from countries other than Germany. For the second time in the show history, this year two special prizes were given to young architects and interior designers under the age of forty years. The prize was captured by young contestants from Great Britain and Spain for their innovative products. All winning entries remained on display during the show.
The year 2010 show dates are from January 16-19.
